Birthday Shots

Despite gloomy weather, my awesome family came into town to help me celebrate my birthday. They made my day really special!

Mom made me a dessert table! So pretty and tempting...we munched all day! She made cake balls with everyone's name on them, and some TO DIE FOR chocolate ganache truffles.

We made a fantastic dinner: grilled shrimp and steak, salad, potatoes, and garlic bread.

Murphy helped open gifts...he is surprisingly good at it!

Since my family won't be in town for Jer's birthday, we had a double celebration. Mom made these amazing cakes...one for each of us. Jer's (left) was a red velvet cake layered with chocolate ganache, and covered in cream cheese icing. Mine (right) was a chocolate cake layered with strawberry mousse and covered in buttercream icing. SO GOOD!

Thanks to my family for a really special birthday!

On a side note, today is the 1 year anniversary of my blog! Time flies when you're having fun! I have some new plans to redesign and get a new URL VERY soon...stay tuned.

Blogger Day of Silence

Tomorrow I'll be taking part in the "Bloggers Day of Silence" in remembrance of the horrible tragedy that has occurred in Japan. Bloggers from Utterly Engaged and ever ours have organized this event along with a Shelter Box to donate to (click here). Visit Down and Out Chic for a great list of posters whose profits go toward Japan.

Showerfall

My awesome husband gave me this as an early birthday gift...and installed it for me! It's the Delta In2ition shower head! You can pull a hand held unit from the middle and still have an overhead stream...it's so great! And when they're both on the showerhead it feels like showering under a waterfall. Thanks so much Jer!

Mission Ac-corn-plished!

I did it! The cornhole bags are complete. I made an extra for each set...just in case. Once I abandoned the nylon thread for all purpose, it was MUCH easier and enjoyable!

Glances...

I'm working on my first sewing project without my mom's help. OK, well she's still helping through the phone, but not in-person help this time. I'm making 8 cornhole bags for my husband. I thought this would be an "easy" project, but I'm learning that sewing is not necessarily ever easy. After ripping the stitches out of the first bag several times, I left my desk in this state and took a day-long break. This weekend I'm returning to the project with a fresh attitude. I learned that my sewing machine will doublestich (yay for twin needles) and I'm trying out some other solutions. So far, sewing has taught me that I'm not a very patient person...this hobby will definitely help with that! I will not give up!

This lovely shadow cast itself on the wall of my office this morning. It's a mix of morning sun and the tree outside my window. I felt very zen. Happy Friday!

Stuff I'm Liking

I love the vintage photos collected on Shorpy. It's like a visual time machine! This photo is titled: New York circa 1905. "Broad Street exchange and curb brokers."

Since it's my birthday month, I guess I have cake on the mind. This rainbow layer cake from Whisk Kid is so gorgeous I don't know if I could eat it!

I adore these pieces of jewelry by Maria Cristina Bellucci...made from colored pencils!

Sew Much Love

This weekend my mom and grandmother came to help me sew new covers for our couch. We recently bought slipcovers and have had a really though time finding covers for the large 24" x 24" pillows. I decided to take on the task of sewing new ones...thank goodness mom and grandma helped! It would have taken me days. Instead we knocked the entire project out in about 5 hours!

Originally, our couch was this brown color (thanks to Baby for modeling). We got the slipcover from SureFit, and I must say, it's really impressive! It totally transformed the couch in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, our pillows are WAY bigger than the 18" standard size and buying new ones is outrageously expensive. I spent about $50 on fabric for 8 pillows.

The fabric is called "Biscayne Bay"

So far, measuring is the most challenging part of sewing for me. I have a tendency to freeze like a deer in headlights when math is involved, but I'm hoping that I'll get better with each project.

I'm so lucky that my mom is such a talented seamstress, and an AMAZING teacher. She has made me some awesome outfits and Halloween costumes through the years. Each of us sewed 4 pillow cases. Mammol helped cut, iron, and put the cases on the pillows. On a sidenote, I like how the guy on TV is looking over mom's shoulder!

 Murphy was trying to help...

Finished product! I love it, and can't think of a better way to spend a rainy weekend than sewing with my mom and grandma... Thanks SO MUCH for your help!
